(Fwd) Ranger Murdered

Marie E. Lackore (mlackore@ATHENET.NET)
Sun, 10 Nov 1996 18:21:38 +0000

I thought this to be appropriate to share with the list. How
senseless. I am very saddened by this event.

On Wednesday, November 6, 1996 a trespasser drove onto the drive at
Tunnel Mill Scout Camp. The Ranger, Andy Campbell, asked the man to
leave, and then called the police for assistance. Andy then went back
outside to ask the man to leave. The trespasser pulled a gun and shot
Andy in the Abdomen with a .357 Magnum.
Andy, in pain, crawled the fifty feet or so to his house, called 911 and
described the man. He was later flown by helicopter to University of
Louisville Hospital. He passed away on the operating table, having lost
20 units of blood. He was 41 years old, and leaves two sons (both Eagle
Scouts), a daughter, and a wife behind.
The trespasser left the camp and was stopped by a moving road block,
injuring two Deputies in the process. A motive is not know. The man is
from Ohio, and had stayed in a room in Clarksville, Indiana last night.
He is suspected to be mentally imbalanced.
Andy had no insurance to cover the costs of the STAT Flight, hospital, or
other costs. His wife now has no place to live. Please send any
contributions to:

Funeral Services will be held Saturday November 9, 1996 in
Charlestown Indiana. Andy had completed Woodbadge and will be presented
his Wood Badge Beeds Posthumously. He will be buried in his Scout
uniform. If Scouting were a religion, then Andy is a martyr. Many
Scouts and Scouters will mourn this death. Andy was well known, and well
liked. Please send your condolences to his family at the great loss they
and the Lincoln Heritage Council is suffering.

Yours in Scouting,
DANIEL STURGEON
