Normally there are eight patrols (in the US, named as have been listed
previously here on the SCOUTS-L). If there are more than 64 participants,
the course director can petition the Region, through their Council, to
allow them to have an additional patrol, most commonly named Raven.
Our last course was large and we had done so, but the course director
chose not to have the 9th patrol for, among other reasons, the concern
that a participant in that patrol would have an opportunity to sing
the Gilwell song in the fellowship of other Ravens. If there is to
be a patrol beyond Raven, the next most common name is Wolf. I have
had the honor of meeting several Ravens and at least two Wolves.
