Add & Scout Spirit

Boys such as th eine described by Jim McMaster do need special help and
attention. He has such a low esteem of himself that we must do what we can
to bolster that feeling of self confidence.
WE have an ADD Troop. There are as many on medication as there are off. WE
assign some older scouts, "Guides" in the strictest sense of the word to
work with these scouts and assist them in completing thier tasks. Oddly
enough some of these were problem scouts in the beginning alos. They know
the trouble and the solutions. They know to ask about medication. They have
been there. Peer group does well in instruction.
Sure we want these guys to be accountable. But we also want to give them the
opportunity to succeed, not just to fail. Punishment doesn't work, because
they already have such a low self esteem that you only push them down more.
They expect to fail and you just confirm that feeling.
I am the parent of two adult ADD's, one Adolescent ADD and the husband of
another, the son of one. I've been there.
