Re: The moldy tent agenda

Timothy J O'Leary (tjo@CPTCHR.AFIP.MIL)

I would like to agree with Jerry, Joyce, Bob and others who have suggested
that the Scout should not be punished, nor have to buy the tent, etc.
Nevertheless, I believe it is very important that this young man be given
the important opportunity to take responsibility for his actions, even if
the damage they caused was a result of ignorance, rather than malace.

The best way to reconcile these two, apparently contradictory goals, is to
ask the Scout to take a special role in yet some other part of the
Scouting program. Perhaps this young man and his patrol (the fundamental
unit of Scouting) can organize a car wash or some other special
fundraiser, or be given an other opportunity to "shine." It seems to me
that this would have the effect of directly or indirectly mitigating the
damage, allowing him to demonstrate his sense of responsibility, to allow
others to see and admire him for accepting responsibility, and thus
enhancing this sense of responsibility, self-esteem, and leadership
skills.

If this is to work, it must be only after quiet discussion with the Scout,
which, one would hope, guides the Scout towards suggesting the course of
action. This is not easy, and is certainly not quick. I suggest that the
results, if sufficient time is taken, the Scout is receptive, and one is
somewhat lucky, will be worth every second of time invested.
