Matt,
You could have him pay for it, but I think you may have some
problems. First, how old is this scout, and is old enough to be responsible
for the equipment. In addition, is this smelly tent worth losing a scout
from the program? You mentioned that the scoutmaster suggested that you
clean it up. I take this to mean that the tent is still usable. I would
recommend that the scout spend some time cleaning the tent. I had a tent
that I let a friend borrow, and they did the same thing. His punishment was
to wash the smelly tent, air it out, and re-seal the tent. Let me tell you
it was truly an experience he will never forget :)
Moldy tent really smell. Have him clean it, and I think he would have
learned his lesson. I'll bet he never leaves a tent wet in the bag agian.
Another point about making scouts pay for damaged items. It does teach the
scout responsibility. However, if we are talking about a $100 tent, then,
instead of a good lesson, the parents, who will ultimatley have to pay for
the tent, will get upset, and pull their son from the troop, and punish him
in ways that may be less constructive.
I am curious what is decided, Matt. Could you please let us know what the
PLC or Troop Committee decides?
