I can assure you that many italian dialects are quite different from the
Italian language.
Many people have trouble understanding their *own* dialect, when spoken by an
elder person who only speaks that... :-)
On the other hand, while the Englist and the American speak different languages
(I have a dictionary for it..) they usually can understand each other if they
choose to :-)
