Sewing

Pete Townsend (ptownsen@HYDRA.CS.GMR.COM)

Several times over the past 7-8 yrs I've proposed that there needs
to be a Sewing MB. Even tho my wife is an excellent needleworker,
I've always sewed my own badges. I also repair rips in clothes,
replace my own buttons, and on occasion re-cuff my pants.

My two boys, likewise, were always required to sew their own badges.
When on the trail, I've resewn backpacks and tents.

The Sewing MB wouldn't need to be complicated. (No need for the
boy to create a pair of pants or jacket). But it should be
detailed enough that the boy understands how to and the
purpose of basting, running, locking/non-locking and other
common stitches. He should show that he has sewn on a button, and
his badges; he should know how to treat the edges of fabric so
they don't unravel; and he should make something that involves
at least three different kinds of stitches.

Lets face it we are inconsistant, (:-)) we think Cooking deserves a MB,
but not Sewing; we think knowing how to whip a rope to prevent
fraying is valuable but not how to prevent cloth from fraying.

I think it used to be that troops and councils could have
special additional MB's, and that would be a way to test this idea
and grow it into a recognized MB. Does anyone have any suggestions?
