'Taint Funny

Dan OCanna (ocanna@ALPHA.CAER.UKY.EDU)

Donald R Izard asked:
Maybe wood badge is a religion?

Paul H. Brown replied:
"Ain't no maybe about it." and then went on to list a few clever
comparisons between WB and certain religions. For those who
missed the point of his posting: IT WAS A JOKE! Tho, I didn't find
it funny-- perhaps 'cause recent events caused me to miss the last
2/3 of SR-144 --it did poke fun at some of the stereotypical aspects
of WB. OK, maybe it was a little funny.

As folks who have been through WB we should try to avoid living up
to those stereotypes, particularly the "secret knowledge" and
especialy the "attitude of superiority".

Those who have earned their beads are not better Scouters, they just
are better trained. Nothing superior about it!

There are no "secrets" in WB, but the learning experience in the
course is enhanced for those who do not know the details beforehand.
Wood Badge IS a great course in leadership skills. The 11 skills
taught in the course are not secret. They are, in fact, to be found
in BSA publications for leaders.

So, what's your point, Dan?

From what I've read on this list there are quite a few new
"critters" out there who will be working their tickets in the
next 2 years. Good for you! Take heed of Paul's joke and try
not to live up to any of the stereotypes he mentioned.

Come to think of it Paul's joke was pretty funny after all, and
I'm glad the contributions are tax deductable, too.

Yours in the spirit of (trained) Scouting,

Dan O'Canna [ocanna@alpha.caer.uky.edu]
