When the troop committee does meet, the treasurer gets defensive when
asked for a report. He usually doesn't have the information available.
(I'm talking about simple things such as, how much money do we have)
The troop does very little fundraising (popcorn sales each year) and the
dues are only $2.00/month. I have suggested that dues be raised to a
figure which reflect reality of the 90's (say $4.00/month) which has =
always
met with resistance.
Two things, first and foremost I would call a meeting of the Troop =
Committee and say that it is for the purpose of going over the books. =
That way the Treasurer will have the info on hand and available for =
inspection by all. If he/she balks then it is time to get a new one, =
QUICK!! The Treasurer position is just like very other position, a =
position of trust and openess, if your Treasurer can't live with this =
then find someone else!!!=20
Second I would STRONGLY urge you to consider other money raising events. =
As a Pack here in Northern Va. going thru the same money constraints we =
this year for our first year did a $10.00 per kid assesment to boost our =
dollars on hand. we are doing popcorn sales, car washes, wreath sales, =
and anything and everything else is considered. We are this year for the =
first year also selling popcorn in front of the grocery stores, =
lumberyards, etc. Anywhere we can get some space to make money. You are =
aware I guess that the return on popcorn to the pack is only about 25% =
of the total?! On our $10.00 assesment we cut that to $5.00 if the kids =
parents(s) volunteered in the Pack.
A pack near us does a $25.00 per kid assesment per year. They also =
REQUIRE each kids parent(one) to volunteer at a Pack event. No =
volunteering, no kid in the Pack!! They have sooo much money and =
participation that they are by far the biggest Pack in the area!!! They =
have 120 total Cub Scouts and are turning others away as the numbers are =
getting too big for a meeting! They have award ceremonies that last for =
HOURS!!!!!! Now they also go on LOTS of activities every month, I mean =
at least two and more often than not three field trips a month!!!!! The =
Pack is so full of money they pay for everything that the Cub Scout =
earns, pins, beltloops, everything! They even have a uniform exchange =
program for the kids that are cash strapped and can't afford new =
uniforms!=20
Here in Northern Va. at join scouting night this year over 250 kids =
joined Scouts! It is by far the biggest turnout ever and is just a sign =
of the times. More parents are working and they realize that Scouting is =
a good thing and they are entrusting their kids to us to help raise =
their kids!
