Re: Pinewood Derby

When I was a Cubmaster we ran an "open class" competition with no
restrictions on the cars for parents, siblings, leaders, anyone who
wanted to get in on the fun.

Generally successful in eliminating the some of the "Dad's" influence on
the car. Started the open competition after hearing about a similiar one,
in which a father (like the CO2) put an Estes rocket engine in the car.
Apparently the car went airborne, lofted into the gymn wall and broke up.
Had the fastest heat but only ran once. [I never had anyone so bold but
I did have a Scout put a propeller on his.]

I only had one additional rule for the Boy's cars outside of the general
set. When I picked the car up to put on the track, I had to be able to let
go. Instituted the rule after one year when a car with wet paint was so
sticky that I had a hard time letting go.

I was always thrilled when a car which obviously was done by the Cub
with little or no help won.
