What I have found over the last 10 years is that a patch (or a belt loop
or an arrow point) is a good way to get a boy to try something that he
might not do otherwise, even though he might really enjoy doing it. This
works especially well when he is Cub Scout age. I think the Girl Scouts
call them "try-its."
There is some carryover into Boy Scouting, but generally they begin to
start doing things because they like it more than for a reward. We still
give out a lot of patches, and they make sure they get theirs, but they
are less inclined to wear them for show.
Except for that Philmont arrowhead or Sommers Canoe Base patch.
And, especially heartwarming is watching them outgrow a uniform and
replace the old camp patch from their first summer camp on the right
pocket with the Troop 24 anniversary patch....
