There have been efforts to add "disabling" switches to passenger seat
airbags by some manufacturers which could be activated when a child is
riding in a car, as a temporary solution to the problem. However, this is
predicated on the fact that the operator "remembers" to disable the airbag
each time, which as we all know, may not happen. Best policy is to have
children ride in the back seat until/unless the airbag is permanently
disabled or in the long run, a better solution is developed by the
manufacturers. Children should not have to "pay the price" for this
design flaw; education by the the Department of Transportation, the
manufacturers and the media would go a long
way in helping make people aware of this serious problem.
