Whilst I have no experience of Vietnamese Scouting my wife and I went on
holiday last November. We found the whole country an absolute delight. The
people are friendly and the food and drink cheap. We travelled to Ho Chi
Min City (Saigon), and several points en route to Hanoi. We crossed int o
China on foot.
THere is still much poverty, as one might expect. However the people
particuarly in the country are always smiling. We hired a couple of guides
from a company run by an ex-pat American. One of whom was a Catholic. He
would not talk too much about politics but he did say there was not too much
trouble practising his religion.
From what little I know of the place it is slowly opening up to the West and
the recognise the value of tourism. The especially like $US, there own
currency is not worth much. Real wealth is measured in dollars.
I supsect that as things improve Scouting may come into the open again. But
as with the USSR it will take a long time.
Finally I urge anyone with an interest in travel to put Vietnam on their
list it really is a beautiful country.
