With regard to the Mile Swim Award, they (since you may earn more than
one) are not worn on the uniform. They are worn on the swim trunks (the
logical place for them!) on the right side (I think I'm right about the
side...I'm
still without my four-pounder binder, and the Uniform Guide has the exact
location of the Mile Swim and the Scout Lifeguard patches....the Scout
Lifeguard patch is worn on the left side).
Someone please check the proper location....I think that I have them backwards.
Thanks!
Why not on the uniform (this same "Scout Sense" approach applies for the
Historic Trails, 50-Miler, and Outdoor/High Adventure patches as well)?
Traditionally, those emblems were available as special cloth patches for
the old Scout Swim Trunks or as leather patches for the backpack or day
sack. As the BSA moved toward embrodery, those patches may look nice
but many, like the 50-Miler and Historic Trails patches actually exceed the
dimensions of the right pocket, where they would normally go if worn on
a uniform. They were *designed* for the backpack or the trunks.
Those special awards make a nice display on the backside of a jacket, on
a blanket (that's where mine were until I started to look for a old BSA wool
blanket to put and display all of the emblems on) or perhaps on the backside
of the youth merit badge sash (where temporary emblems can now be worn
at the wearer's discretion).
Hope that helps, Mike!
