I think this a great thread on Scouts-L, but I do have just one
thing for everyone to keep in mind...
Instead of focussing on just boys or girls having more abuse than
the other, lets try to think of everyone in the whole picture. We are
here as leaders/scouters to help deter abuse amongst kids in today's
society. It's unfortunate, but it happens. I can attest to the fact--I
had to deal with it several times this summer (as an Aquatics Director,
you tend to have more abuse cases to deal with than the average summer
camp staffer).
Just a quick side note: abuse is rampant in today's society
amongst children, and we as Scouters should do our best to get trained
in prevention techniques, and also to recognize the symptoms/signs of
possible abuse. Remeber, too, that there is more than sexual abuse out
there--don't forget about the physical abuse and emotional abuse as well.
I think as Scouters we can make a HUGE difference in the lives of
today's youth, and one of those ways is preventing/recognizing abuse.
Once again, another bumbling $.02 from Hank. ;)
