A Scout is Trustworthy

After paying for coffee this morning I brought to the cashier's attention
that she had given me ten dollars too much change for my twenty. The
person behind me in line insisted on shaking my hand as a "rare" honest
man and asked if I had been a Boy Scout. I told him unfortunately no,
but that I was making up for lost time as my son's Cub Scout den leader.
He of course had been a scout and commented sadly that there seemed to
be little interest in scouting these days, inferring that honesty in society
had
suffered as a result. Although I couldn't offer much comfort about the state
of society I did assure him, based on personal experience and sources like
Scouts-L, that the scouting flame still burns brightly.
My point is not self-congratulation but rather the fact that honesty was so
strongly associated with scouting in this man's mind. Unless the subject has
been previously rendered "threadbare", I would be curious to hear any other
stories about the honesty/scouting connection made by the non-scouting
public.
