I received the following note, and thought it should provoke some
interesting discussion, and perhaps even find the exact line and verse.
>>[snip]... I need a favor from you... I am nowthe advancement chair for
>>a troop that while they are very much into getting rank requirements
>>completed are not at all in boards of review... we have 3 a year yes
>>three... in taking over last june and making the schedule up for this
>>year i thought i had an agreement of at least 5 (i take what I can get....
>>
>>[snip]
>>
>>my request? I have read in the List that national recomends at least
>>one a month... can i get a quote on that including line and verse...
>>i would greatly appreciate it..
My response:
>That reminds me, I need to get my Troop Committee Guidebook back from
>the CC....
>
>I did look at my advancement guidelines, and it says (page 16), "The
>review should be at a convenient time and location...."
>
>We do ours as needed. Once a Scout has done all of the requirements
>for a rank, I don't see the point in making him wait for actually
>earning it. Seems counter to the purpose of advancement. And perhaps
>devalues it as well. If we want them to advance, then delay their
>actually getting it, what are we telling them?
>
>A Scout will ask me for a Scoutmaster conference (I insist on a week's
>notice), and I will alert the Advancement Chair. Generally, I try to
>schedule the SMC for the pre-opening, and the committee members will
>come for the meeting and do the BoR right after flags. With more than
>30 Scouts in our troop, saving all of the rank advancement for a few
>times would pretty much guarantee a long evening for everyone. The
>last meeting before a Court of Honor does sometimes get crowded, and I
>do keep reminding the Scouts not to wait to the last minute, but ....
>
>One year, we had eight Scouts make rank during the first week at Scout
>camp. I was fortunate to have several committee members in camp, and
>we did BoRs for seven of them during camp! This year we had a BoR
>during the weekend between first & second week when we had enough
>committee members in camp to hold it.
>
>I did peek at an older Troop Committee Guide and it suggested holding
>monthly BoRs. One advantage is that we could spend some more time
>with the Scouts that aren't advancing (we do have a few...), and I
>may suggest that in the future. Thanks for bringing up the idea.
>
>Hope this helps....
