I also found it's time requirement for leaders was about double my Scouting
load - I was supposed to learn the verses as well, also as a section leader
I had absolutely no control over the weekly program, it was rigid and had to
follow a specific format - no patches to earn for tying knots, couldn't
bring in your stamp collection to get a patch for it.

I think AWANA is a good "as well as" program for a church, it should not be
the the only program run, it does nothing for people skills, teaches nothing
but to memorise vivle verses (I got tossed out because I was unable to
memorise verses - I have a short term memory problem, a situation I found
very distressing a tthe time as I was informed I was a bad example and
should be ashsmed of myself)
