Re: BSA Policy and Politics

Barbara L. Ford (bford@SCS.UNR.EDU)

I'm Barbara Ford with the Nevada Area Council, Pinenut District. I'm
very new to using the Internet and hope I don't break any
"Netiquette" rules. If I do, please excuse me for just awhile.
I've been in scouting quite a few years and have had at one time
all of my six children involved. I have five boys -- one made
Eagle and is currently still involved in scouting. The rest have
moved on to other agendas. My daughter was an Explorer for a few
years. I work with a Cub Scout Pack in Minden, Nevada and I am
also attending the College
of Commissioner Science in my district. I am working on my thesis.

I am trying to complie some guidelines for putting on Cub Scout District
events -- such as Winter Fun Day, Snow Day, Science Day, Pinewood Derby,
etc., etc. If you have the time, I would appreciate suggestions on the
procedures followed by your organizers of Cub events. What are they?
How about a description of the events you have, how are they
advertised, how are they funded? How many do you have a month or a
year? How do you handle sports program conflicts? Do you work around
multi-track schools? If you have multi-track schools, do you run the
events twice? Who
puts the events on; individual units with a district person helping or
district
person with individual units assisting? Any procedures you have to enlist
volunteers to help with these events would also be appreciated.

I would like to prepare a handbook that could be distributed to a
volunteer who has agreed to take on the task of organizing a district
event. Hopefully, with some guidelines in place, volunteers will be more
willing to jump in and chair events.

Thanks for your help.

The way I understand it, my address will be at the top of this memo so
thanks.....
