No Singing? Song copyrights

Jess Olonoff (jolonoff@GATE.NET)

To All,

I heard a report about this effort by ASCAP some months ago on NPR. It
was my understanding from this program that ASCAP is interested in going
after those establishments (bars, clubs, Deejays, etc.) and organizations
that used copyrighted materials and gained financially from their use and
did not pay the respective royalties.

As For-profit summer camps use these songs as an integral and planned
part of their program they too would logically be required to pay these
royalties. I believe it would be better for ASCAP to let this go but then
again I'm not a singer or songwriter so my view probably does not count
much too those who do make their living in this manner.

I did not hear any mention of ASCAP trying to become the music police and
running rampant through day care centers that happened to break into a
rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon"

And I believe and hope that they have no intention of going after Scouts
of any kind.

Yours in Scouting, jess
