Diminished attendance during the summer is fairly typical and to be
expected for the reasons mentioned; Summer family vacations,
activities, and a general lack of the "regimen" during the normal school
year makes it less likely that Scouts will attend weekly meetings.
Our experience has been that Scouts are good about attending pre-scheduled
events and activities such as summer camp, weekend campouts, etc., but
just not regular meetings.
We anticipate this, and don't have too many concerns about it because the
Scouts always seem to come back in full swing when school starts. We
usually do light duty/fun activities like bike hikes, "ice cream socials"
for Scouts/parents with baseball, frisbee, and other fun activities. It's
also a good time to do projects to fix up our Scoutroom, repair camping
equipment, and general upkeep type duties; Scouts who wish to, can work on
merit badges with counselors, or pass off lower rank requirements. We
also make uniforms optional or class "B" for summer meetings depending on
what the activity for the evening is. This type of activity has always
been popular with the Scouts and those who are in town usually come as
often as they can.
