Hi folks!! I've been reading the digests on the list today (thanks,
Dee!!) and wanted to place my 2.5 pennies in on the "International
Travel" item.
The BSA's and GSUSA's uniforms are ALWAYS appropriate attire if you
wish to be known as a Scout/Scouter while traveling. I've worn my
field uniform to and from several locations, traveling through airports
and even into taxicabs without *problems*. A "problem" is someone
wanting to do harm to you....at every event I've encountered, people
not only wanted to do me "good", but they actually wanted to "start a
conversation with me" (this CAN be dangerous, only because the person
won't SHUT UP and want to tell you EVERY story he or she can about
their time in "Scouts"!! *giggle*) instead.
And YES, I've had to endure a LOT of those stories...it's kinda hard
to change seats at 30,000 feet if you're in the window seat and your
"friend" is next to you!!
Let's use some "Scouters' Sense" here, gang...if you wish to wear the
uniform, do so and do so with pride in what you're wearing. Most people
can read and understand the "Boy Scouts of America" or "Girl Scouts of
the USA" strip and can easily tell you from a military person or even
a foreign soldier...and Dee's saying that "their age can be a good tip
off, as well"!!
When representing your youth agency on the road, by air, car, or even bus,
do so with the best intentions of your organization and yourself. Yes,
be careful...there are some nuts out there, but also be yourself. People
will look at you (and your unit, if you're traveling as a group) as the
"best represenatives" of your unit, commmunity and movement.
Just so you know, I ALWAYS carry a spare Scout Shirt in my car whenever we
travel; I have two Scout shirts, a teeshirt and a pair of Scout shorts in
my carryon baggage enroute here and to Germany. And yeah, someone stopped
me two days ago and asked me "Boy Scout pants: are you a Boy Scout leader?"
and then the conversation started...
