Here in Philadelphia they are called "Hoagies", and of course we
claim that they were invented here. The name is supposed to come from the
large sandwhiches that the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard workers brought with
them from their South Philly homes. The now defunct Naval shipyard is
situated on property that used to be "Hog Island" before the water was
filled in. Ergo the Hog Island Sandwich was eventually shortened to "Hoagie"
