Bob Taschler asked in passing:

>P.S. Does anyone know what a complete set of BSA pub would cost?

About $250, not including the items which can only be obtained through
your local Council through the appropriate program or support division
at National (those that start with ##-###, as in 23-331).

An *estimation* of what it would cost to properly "equip" a volunteer
Scouter with the ESSENTIAL information needed for his or her role is:

Cub Scouting leaders $75
NEW Boy Scouting leaders $122
MID Boy Scouting leaders $70
OLD Boy Scouting leaders $40
NEW Exploring leaders $70
MID/OLD Exploring leaders $35-40

Unit/District Commissioners $175-200
Council Commissioners $150-175

Unit Committeemembers/Chair $100
Chartered Organizational Representatives $30

District Committeemembers/Chair $150
Exploring Division/District members/Chair $120

Council Committeemembers/Chair $160
Exploring Council Committeemembers/Chair $100

Council Presidents $25-50
(if there's anything they need, their Council Executive charges it to the
Council and provides a copy. This figure is for the basic manuals for
Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Exploring)

Council Commissioners $50-75
(again, most of these items are available through their Council Executive,
other than the basic books and some Commissioner-specific items)

(NEW is a new leader; MID is a leader with 2-4 years' tenure; OLD is a
leader with more than 4 years tenure; Cub Scouting's program is modified
more often than Boy Scouting or Exploring therefore there's no distinction
between "NEW","MID" and "OLD" in this *estimate*)

The estimates are figured using the BSA's Supply Division catalog from
1994 (I haven't had time to update the figures, but the prices of the pubs
has for the most part, stayed constant since then), and figuring in the costs
of the "basic books" for the position held, along with the basic boy books,
and guides, hints and techniques books and publications to assist you in
getting the most from your position. It does NOT include registration, Boys'
Life, Scouting, or Exploring Journal magazines nor does it include materials
obtained through your local Council via a training course or other event.
Nor does it include anything which someone has photocopied for your usage.

Your mileage may vary on these estimates. I spend about $100 a year
updating my publications as much as I can and as much as my local Council
will have available for me to do so. Also note that some positions, like
International Represenative and Chaplain have very little official material
and so I did not include them in the overall figures.

Thanks for asking about this....I was just about ready to convert this to a
web page, but I read my mail before I started and so I added it in.
Jessica's having me to "clean out my stuff" before I leave, so until I can
get a ZIP drive, I'm happy to provide it!
