Removing mildew smell from tents

As a part of one of my non-scouting activites, I have agreed to
coordinate a backpacking program for a week at a church-run camp.
Surveying the gear last weekend, I discovered that the nylon tents had
been stored in a damp basement and may not have been properly dried
before putting them away (our scouts NEVER do this :) ). As a result,
they smell terrible -- I suspect mildew and mold. I did not detect
much discoloration.
I would like suggestions on how I can remove this smell without
destroying the nylon tents. Please specify whether you (or someone
you know) has tested your idea and what resulted. I could not find
anything in a search of the archives. To save bandwidth, please respond
via email and I will summarize to the list.
I have considered washing the tents, either with an all-fabric bleach
or tricresyl phosphate. I have also considered Lysol. Any of these
could destroy the waterproofing. I could re-waterproof using Thompson
Waterseal.
Thank you
