Re: A Little Advice

Our troop has been meeting in the same school now for 24 years. The troop is
still sponsored by the school (despite new school district policies). During
that time, the school now has its third principal. During the tenure of each
principal, the troop has always invited him to a COH at least twice a year.
He does not always come, but when he does, he loves seeing and knowing by
name several faces in the crowd. He has also noted the improvement of some
of these boys in school which the current principal attributes to Scouting.
As far as scheduling, I can think of one year where the calendar got mixed
up, but the PTA meetings were quickly rescheduled to another night.

Of course we have the down side of not getting money from the school
district like we might if sponsored by the Elks, Moose, a church, etc. But
the relationship has worked well over the years. Our feeder pack still meets
at the same school for pack meetings, but changed sponsorship about 4 years
ago to the local Moose Lodge because of the dire need for some sponsorship
money. Again, they have a positive relationship with both the school and
Moose lodge.

We are one of the last in the council still sponsored by a public school.
Most units have now moved to some sort of church or other organization
sponsorship. Just do what works for you and your unit.
