A future in good hands.

I had a remarkable experience at Cub Summer camp over the last four days.

I went with four first year Webelos, seven second year Webelos and a Life
Scout (Den Chief) to Camp Oest, one of the Broad Creek camps run by the
Baltimore Area Council.

While I was there, I saw the most remarkable demonstration of Scouting
enthusiasm and teamwork I have ever seen; this camp staff, mostly Life
and Eagle Scouts, both intense loyalty to each other, a
genuine liking for the Webelos and their leaders, and remarkable
competence. I have never seen a team, youth or adult, work together
better.

There were two young men, Eddie and Rob, who served as camp "den chiefs"
(- assigned to the unit part time - the youth that perform this service in
Boy Scout Camps are frequently given the "Commissioner" title), who we got
to know better than most of the others. At departure, our Life Scout
and I gave these O/A members the only recognition we could come up with
on the spot - our Lodge Flaps, in recognition of their outstanding example
of "Cheerful Service." It seemed to have served as an appropriate
recognition.

So, if any of you knows an Eddie or Ron that have been working at Camp
Oest this summer, you know two extraorldinary young men. If any of you
wants a wonderful summer experience for your Webelos, I strongly
recommend Camp Oest. If you are looking for a special recognition for
an O/A member outside your council, consider your lodge flap and a short
talk about "Cheerful Service." If you are worried about the
future, remember that a lot of it is in the hands of young men and women
like these. And finally, if you are helping to develop these youth
through your Scouting time and energy - Thank you!
