No, you shouldn't....those are taken and x-rayed before they are thrown
into the cargo bin and into the plane. Just make sure that EVERYTHING you
have in your backpack is written down on a piece of paper and that paper
is CARRIED with you or with your carry-on luggage so if anything is
missing, you can make a quick claim for them; make sure that your backpacks
are SECURELY FASTENED and that your duffel bags have padlocks (better
than the combination lock, at least for me....I'm not good with numbers!)
Also, have a photo of your backpack and duffles and somehow make your
duffle bags "stand out for you" (magic marker, special patch sewn at a
location, etc.) because there are SEVERAL SIMILAR bags and packs
and it makes it again easier to claim if lost or "misplaced".

>also, how strict is the "full uniform" rule. i only have the one shirt
>(yes, i know i need to buy one for my district events, but i'm cheap)

When I taught there at Philmont, we tried as hard as possible to make
all Scouters --including those with only one uniform -- feel as confortable
as possible. Some sessions require the uniform because of "visitors or
special Scouters" attending or presenting programs; others are very
informal and allow you to wear Scouting-related tees or other items.
The general rule is, however, that the field uniform is the accepted
and most generic uniform for your stay at Philmont. I would, on the safe
side, get one more shirt and once you arrive at Philmont, to ask the
instructor or team member. Most are very flexible and like you, don't have
a lot of uniforms that they brought.

Also, there's a nice trading post at the Volunteer Training Center and
another one down at the main base at the Scout Ranch down the
road a bit (a good evening walk). There's not a lot of insignia there,
but they do have a great selection of shirts, pants, jackets and other
items. "Bring your Visa card!" *heheheheee*

(They also take the other three credit cards, cash, and travelers and
personal checks as well.)

Remember that Philmont's Training Center...as well as ALL of Philmont...
is a national showcase of what Scouting is all about!! Therefore, your
participation in as complete a uniform as possible is essential.

Have a great time, and don't forget to go to the barbecue later on in
the week....*yummmmmm yum*!!
