Re: Who can attend Eagle COH

Jan Mussler asked:

>I've got a call in to my sister in Germany (Transatlantic Council)to see
>when my nephew will be ready for his Eagle (first in our family that I
>know of). Since we are going to visit in a couple weeks (lucky us!), what
>is the appropriate etiquette for such an occassion?

The Eagle Courts of Honor is a public occassion in most cases, unless for
some reason that the Eagle Scout himself wants to make it a private affair.
Therefore, everyone is welcome to attend and witness the presentation
of the Eagle Scout Badge and other items to the new Eagle Scout.

If you are a Scouter or Scout (Boy or Girl), your field uniform is the best
option for wear. The second option are nice clothing. The Eagle Scout
Court of Honor is NOT considered a "formal dress occasion". On the
other hand, if you are a Scouter or Scout, you should wear your complete
(or as a complete as possible) field or dress uniform.

Gifts to the new Eagle Scout should be something which the new Eagle
Scout can use: uniform items, reflective plaques or framed items, photos
of the Eagle "doing Scouting stuff". Since the Eagle will (we hope!) be
the reciepient of several Eagle Scout-related items (neckerchief, NESA
membership, etc.), try to get something which he would remember and
not feel ashamed displaying in his later life. I got an Avon Golf Ball
decanter from my Aunt Sue and while I appreciated the thought behind
it, somehow it wasn't as nice as getting a gift certificate for two to a
local resturant or two sets of movie passes.

Of course, I don't know of an Eagle that doesn't like a gift certificate to
something that he can REALLY take advantage of with his non-Scout
friends, like a book of free car washes or a telephone. Being there in
Germany reduces the amount of "Americanized" items, but there are
plenty of German businesses and retailers as well as the Army and
Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) which will provide a gift
certificate.

The ceremony itself normally takes no more than an hour, with a
reception either beforehand or afterwards. Its a special occasion for the
young man, and he'll be overcome with emotion for sure during and
after the occasion.

Of course, photographs and videotapes are welcome, and if the
ceremony has been crafted by the Eagle Scout and his Scoutmaster,
there will be plenty of times to take memorable photographs of the
occasion. The ceremony is NOT that static that words beforehand
to either the Eagle, Scoutmaster or both, that they won't "stop the
procedings" long enough to allow photos to be taken.

Go, Jan!! Its sure to be something special for the young man to see
you and your husband there. BTW, where in Germany will you be?
