A few weeks back I posted a note asking for help for two wonderful
Scouters in a time of need. As you will recall Tommy had been our
District Commissioner and Assistant Council Commissioner. While he was
undergoing chemotherapy, his wife while trying to help their daughter
after the birth of their first grandchild had a succession of strokes and
heart failure in Hawaii. Help had been requested to find a way to get
Barbara back due to the high cost of transportation.
The response from concerned and wonderful Scouters here and abroad was
heart-warming. Information on mercy flights, contacts, media help and
the like flowed in almost within minutes of sending the message out. For
all those that demonstrated their concern, I want to thank you from the
bottom of my heart. Just knowing that so many people cared was important
for Tommy and that alone helped give strength when he was feel at his
lowest.
We pursued the leads and others joined in to help try to find a way to
arrange transportation. My special thanks go out to the folks at
Lockheed Martin. Despite these efforts, which can sometimes proceed
slowly, it was necessary to get Barbara moved before help could be
arranged and Tommy had to arrange credit to get a flight. Barbara and
Tommy are now together once again. He is now trying to find a way to
repay that debt, but at least they are together and can face the
challenges of health in mutual support and love.
>From this I can say without hesitation that I am proud to be part of a
group of folks that can take time from their daily lives to care about
their fellows.
