Not being from Birmingham, I may miss some of the details. What you passed
was the Central Alabama Council's service center. It is a 15,000 sq. ft.
building built in Liberty Park. It is built partially underground. I believe
that the land was given to them by Liberty National Life, an insurance company
based in the Birmingham area, hence the copy of the Statue of Liberty. A few
year's back, when they had the Grand Opening of the building, they held a
Council Camporee to coincide on the grounds. If my memory serves me, they had
some bad weather to spoil things. There was a write-up in either the Scouter,
or Boys Life (bad memory) telling all about the event.
