Not having had any resources in front of me at the time I made the mistake
of assuming that the beret had been discontinued BEFORE the tan shirt.
Obviously I was mistaken. Sorry.

The option of using unofficial berets is still, theoretically, not allowed.
(Although my troop does the same thing with the campaign hats since the
official ones are so expensive.)

In theory, when a uniforming option is discontinued the intent is for it to
disappear as the number already in circulation automatically decreases.
The allowance of wearing old uniform parts is most likely economic so as
not to force everybody to run out and buy complete new uniforms when there
is a style change made. Certainly, IMHO, the intention is not for people
to continue to acquire clones of the outdated material and then claim that
they are still "official."
