Planning a local Junior Leadership Program

Ed Faynor (EDFAYNOR@AOL.COM)
Thu, 27 Jun 1996 10:33:41 -0400

After observing our Troop at work this last year the Adult Leadership
noted that our current older Scouts were missing some of the basic
management training and tools necessary to be successful in
running a Scout Led Troop. Soft spots in recruiting and some
small loss of membership has left gaps in our continuity of training.
We have a block of 8 scouts at First Class or higher and a block of
8 new Scouts in a Troop of 20 boys. There was also a large age and
skill level difference between our older Scouts and their predecessors.

To respond to this need our Scoutmaster, a former Scoutmaster,
and I will be planning a two day training session open to the whole
Troop. It will be structured around Troop Management and "How To".
For example: How to plan and run a Troop meeting, a Patrol meeting,
a Camp out, Planning for Advancement support, Fund raisers, etc.
Role playing and Team building exercises will play a predominant
role in the program.

I would like to appeal to the wisdom and experience of the List members.
Can you point me in the right direction for BSA documents that deal
with these topics. In this instance read the book is a really good
answer. Sources for standard forms and their use are also helpful.
Of course, if there are methodologies that you have developed locally
that also get the job done please include them. We want the Scouts
to leave this program with as complete a tool box as is possible in a
two day session.

Additionally, if there is information specific to this type of program at
any of the Web Sites available for downloading / copying please provide
the address.

I will post back to the list the actual program we develop and also an
edited version of the sources / documents.

Thank you in advance for all of your inputs.
