The following should not be construed as an endorsement for
Backpacking Magazine; however, I have found much useful
information within its pages. With regard to the current
thread on Gorp: the December 1995 issue discussed the topic
of trail snacks and provided a number of variants. The
article talked about
Good Old Raisins and Peanuts as well as
Granola, Oats, Raisins, and Peanuts (thus answering the original
post).
My favorite recipe is to combine in a large zippered plastic bag
1 lb. dry roasted peanuts (I don't care for the oil and salt)
1 lb. M&M's
1 box raisins
1 box cereal
For variety <G> I vary the cereal.. sometimes Cheerios, sometimes
Quaker Oat Squares, sometimes Frosted Mini-Wheats (the small ones).
Sometimes I've been known to skip the first three ingredients and
just bring the cereal!
The April 1996 issue of Backpacking rated various bug repellents.
A trip to the local library should put a copy in your hands. Personally,
I treat bugs in the same manner as George Bernard Shaw treated the
common cold; viz., "With contempt!!" The following URL provides a
Canadian mosquito repellent recipe of that ilk:

Enjoy!
