Is anyone on the list a Scouter from east carolina council? I have a
young friend of the family who has property about five miles from the
bridge to Emerald Isle, they have navigable river frontage and a site
on the land where Scouts have built a campsite complete with dock and
nature trails. It is seldom used, and the young man would like to
see the Scouts make the place their own again. He is in college, and nearly
never there, but there is a kennel on the property and the kennel owner
acts as caretaker and can schedule the use of the campsite. The young
man's grandfather passed away and left the property to his sons, but the
property is designated a natural heritage area, which means they must
keep it open to the public (not just Scouts, but the campsite can be
scheduled for exclusive use by one troop or group at a time) for the
purpose of enjoyment of and education about our natural heritage, so this
is a property which qualifies for service projects within BSA guidelines.
You will see plenty of service projects like bird boxes all about the place.
Our troop has camped there and explored the area some by canoe. While we
were paddling, a shrimp jumped into our canoe. We stepped out to wade and
found clams with our toes, saw hundreds of fiddler crabs everwhere we
looked and even caught a few of the dinner table variety. There is
unlimited potential for adventure at this site. If you camp in eastern
Carolina, this is one place you should put on your list.
Let me know if you are interested, and I will send you the particulars.
