Re: SCOUTS-L files

(no name) ((no email))
Fri, 21 Jun 1996 11:36:03 -0500

John Economides asked:

>How does one get a catalog of files that are out on SCOUTS-L, and what is the
>best way to retrieve what you want????

The "catalog" of files on the Scouts-L server is called the INDEX file, and can
be obtained by sending a posting (without a signature file) to the LISTSERVER
ADDRESS (listserv@tcuvbm.is.tcu.edu) and in the body of the post, place the
following information:

INDEX SCOUTS-L

That's it. You'll get a posting in return telling you that the message is being
processed, then you'll get the Index. The index file can be imported into some
database programs or edited to just give you the information you need.

To get a specific file, for instance, the archived discussion we had about
dealing
with the death of a Scout or Scouter, you would look for the item on the
filelist like
this:

**************************************************************
* *
* SCOUTS-L Files *
*
* Examples of GET commands: *
* GET EAGLETIP INTRO SCOUTS-L *
* GET SCOUTS-L REVERENT SCOUTS-L *
* *

SCOUTS-L DEATH ALL OWN V 79 1558 95/03/31 07:37:47 Dealing with
Death - Mike Walton (3/95)

And you would send a posting to THE LISTSERVER program similiar to the one
you used to get the index file; except, you would type in the specific name
of the
file(s) you want as so:

GET SCOUTS-L DEATH SCOUTS-L

(I sometimes don't use the extra "Scouts-L" at the end, and I'm still able
to get the
file)

REMEMBER THAT THERE IS NOBODY PHYSICALLY AT THE LISTSERVER
ADDRESS....it's just a computer program or two that acts on what you send it
and depending on what you sent, it responds to your requests (or perceived
request, which is why it doesn't really know what to do with a signature file!!)

If you have problems getting a specific file, please let someone here know and
we'll do our best to get it for you. If everything else doesn't work, then
get ahold
of our listowner, Jon Eidson, and he'll be glad to help out (usually, when
it gets
to him, it means that something's wrong with the listserver software...normally,
the process is rather smooth and errorfree).

Hope this helps!!
