Those elected by their peers are called "candidates", Mark, until
they participate in an Ordeal ceremony during the spring, summer or
in many locations, in the early fall.
To become an Order of the Arrow member, Boy Scouts and Varsity
Scouts must be:
* approved for election by their Scoutmaster or Coach and registered
as a member of the unit which participates in the election process
* have participated in at least 15 days and nights camping over
the past 2 years
* have participated in a BSA Summer Camp program for at least
6 overnight days and nights (one week) during the past 2 years
* have earned at least the First Class Scout rank
* elected by those youth members whom are NOT Order of the
Arrow members within the unit registered in
Adults may be elected to the Order of the Arrow in the following
manner:
* approval by the unit's or District's Committee and registration
as an adult member of the BSA
* have participated in at least 15 days and nights camping over
the past two years
* have participated in a BSA Summer Camp program for at least
6 overnight days and nights (one week) during the past 2 years
*a committment to providing a positive role model for youth
members, and a demonstrated asset to the Order of the Arrow
due to his or her Scouting experiences, skills and abilities
Only the camping requirement for adults can be waived, and
a really good reason why it should be waived must be given
to the Lodge Executive Committee, which has the final
recommendation authority on all adult Order of the Arrow
candidates. The Council Scout Executive has the final
authority on all candidates, youth and adult, to the Order of
the Arrow in his or her local Council.
The Order of the Arrow is a brotherhood of honor Scouts and
Campers, and exist only because Scouts and Scouters make
it such an honor for both those within the Order and those
striving to attain the high camping and advancement standards
that over the years, the OA has maintained.
There is a separate Order of the Arrow discussion list, for those
Arrowmen that choose to discuss various aspects of the OA
program, which is an OPTIONAL Council-level program. To
subscribe, send a email posting to the following address.
You will get in return a questionnaire to complete to verify your
membership in the Order:
