Perhaps we need to "lighten up" a little, folks. There is clearly no
intention of surmising that a "Ph.D." or "M.A." or "B.A." ,etc., in a
Scouting training program is being construed as a "legitimate academic
degree." It is merely a "borrowing" of an academic convention to denote a
level of training in a Scouting program. It has been done for many years
and I have never heard of it being questioned until now.
I seriously doubt that anyone who as a "legitimate academic degree" is in
danger of losing it or compromising their academic integrity if they
receive a "Ph.D." from a College of Commissioner Science or University of
Scouting. Certainly, if someone tried to impute that a credit for a
Scouting training course was received from an accredited academic
facility, that would constitute fraud, but it would be the direct fault of
the person who made the claim, and not from the Scouting venue issuing the
certificate.
If there is concern about the legitimacy of academic credits and degrees,
perhaps attention should be paid to those individuals who are fradulently
claiming to be accredited academic institutions and issuing phony academic
degrees or credits, rather than questioning the legitimacy of Scouting
training programs that award "degrees."
Surely we have more important things to worry about and
discuss than trivia such as this in our Scouting venues.
