I met my son when he was 9 1/2 years old, and his adoption was
finalized two weeks before his 11th birthday. This is far from being
a stigma! Just the opposite. It was mostly a relief, knowing that
he is now stable in a family and a home.
We made announcements. Most people know he is adopted. They meet his
sister and his brother, both of whom were adopted by other families.
Ask the parents. They'll be quick with an answer. And while the
child will grieve for his old family, the adoption is a joyous
occasion.
