Need suggestions for teaching leadership skills

Alan Houser (troop24@EMF.NET)
Sat, 1 Jun 1996 18:57:02 -0700

I've just finished a Scoutmaster conference marathon week (yep, we have
a Court of Honor coming up), and as I reflect on it, our troop is changing.
Twenty-five of the thirty-three Scouts are First Class or above. In the
past, we've managed to combine the council weeklong course for a few Scouts
with one-on-one teaching of the others as needed. Now, I am recognizing,
there are too many Scouts who need to move into leadership positions and
who need to have an effective exposure to the 11 leadership skills in
something like an abbreviated JLT.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the skills in question,
I refer you to Don Tolin's page at

http://w3.trib.com/~dont/scouting/leadersk.html

For resources, I am fortunate to have some excellent older Scouts who
will be stepping back from the troop leadership positions this year
to allow the next group to lead. And an Assistant Scoutmaster who is
Wood Badge-trained (and working his ticket) who has been a tremendous
help in the past year. Plus two other trained ASMs who have blossomed
this year.

What I am looking for is something (besides the BSA video JLT workshop)
that would help us over a period of a few weekends or evenings to go
through the leadership skills in a way that allows the Scouts to work
at solving problems by practicing the skills.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
