Hello Philmonters,
Thought I would try and bring you up to date on the situation regarding the
fire in the Carson National Forest, west of HOmE, based on fact (as reported
in the Albuquerque Journal, radio and from TV) and personal observation.

Personal observation consisted of standing on my front porch and looking to
the West after sunrise this morning. From my point of view, the Ranch looks
terriffic and appears to be fire free this morning (as it has since the fire
in the Carson started). Conditions still remain the same however and it is
very, very, very dry (I think it is against the law to write dry more than
three times to describe something).

The Journal and other media sources (radio and TV from Albuquerque and
Denver) are saying about the same things. The fire has been stopped in its
advance, but not yet contained. All of the residents evacuated from Red
River, Lama and Questa would probably be allowed back in sometime today.
People from Red River are staying in Eagle Nest, Angel Fire and Cimarron and
people from Questa are mostly in Taos. Sidelight story heard from New Mexico
State Policeman of my acquaintence - after being evacuated from Questa the
first time, many residents returned the same day, while the fire was raging,
because it was time for the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

In the town of Lama it is reported that 32 structures were lost. The paper
hasn't reported on the affliation of the residents except that some were
members of the Lama Foundation "a spiritual retreat".

The NM State Police closed NM 522 southbound from Questa to Arroyo Hondo and
stopped all traffic on NM 38 between Questa and Red River. They also had NM
38 closed between Eagle Nest and Red River. They are saying that the fire
started in San Cristobal from someone burning trash which sparked the very
(etc.) dry grass.

Saturday the state banned all open fires an state and private lands. State
Forester Toby Martinez said the restriction covers everything from burning
trash and weeds to smoking a cigarette.

The fire looks to be stopped about thirty miles from the Ranch.

The editorial page of yesterday's Journal had the following list of tongue in
cheek fire restrictions in a well done cartoon:

Thanks for taking time out of finals week. Things are OK here but still
very, very, very dry.
