As way of Introduction, my name is Dee LaRock. I was actively involved in
Girl Scouts growing and since I enjoyed scouting so much stepped forward to
help the cub scouts. I am in my second year as cubmaster for our local pack.
I am a cubmaster on a military base. Unfortunately, we have several
problems that our due to our location. Absentee parents is the biggest, or
second biggest. Another problem is that the base does not support scouting
the way it use to, leading to charter problems and leadership problems. I
and most of the other leaders in the pack are suffering from burnout.
We have problems getting support from the charter partner (which is a
partner in name only.) We have problems getting support from the parents
and the local community. Many of our boys cannot afford uniforms, which
unfortunately can't even be found at the local thrift stores anymore.
I have made a very difficult decision that I will not do this next year. I
will assist if someone else wishes to take over, but I can't kill myself
over this. I am saddened by the thought that the pack might disappear, but
with my husband now overseas...I can't do everything. Whether we like to
admit it or not, volunteering costs money. Since, I was recently downsized
(and have no $$$ of my own any more) I cannot afford to do this.
So, I'm sorry this was a long introduction. If anyone can give me advice on
how to prod these people out of their living rooms and excuses...I'm willing
to listen.
