Why don't you approach community service organizations instead of corporate
organizations? The only reason why I said that is because your local
Council is going to be approaching the corporate world through grants or
outright giving for monies. In larger local Councils, there's a staff
member that has responsibililites for "corporate and foundation giving".
The approach should be something like this: your Senior Patrol Leader,
accompanied by yourself as Scoutmaster, approaches a meeting of the
community group (the Lions, Rotary, other groups), explain what Scouting is
and the need that the unit has (be specific: four tents for eight boys of a
new Troop; two complete cooking kits for two patrols of eight boys...etc.).
Have the group discuss the merits of this one-time support and make a decision.
Remember that to make it effective, the youth should be in the lead, and
that they, supported by you and other adults, should be there to support
their contentions as to why they need the items in the numbers and for the
reasons stated.
A local community that is sold on Scouting...should be able to come up with
the materials and monies needed to support a new community project: a new
Troop.
Another thing you might want to do, Kevin, is to ask the existing units in
your District for their "handmedowns", as in
older camp gear, cooking gear and other items. In most cases, their
"upgrade" is your "essential items". Ask to see and inspect the items
before agreeing to take them.
