And many of Tom's friends and family
Camp Mattatuck - is a Boy Scout camp in Plymouth, CT where Tom has
served as Director for soon to be 25 years. The Camp runs summer camp
sessions for over 1800 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Connecticut Rivers
Council offers Scouting programs to over 31,000 youth in the State of
Connecticut covering 127 cities and towns. It also operates 13 day
camps and 4 resident camps, of which Camp Mattatuck is one.
"Anything worth doing, is worth doing well." Thousands of individuals
over the years, have learned this from Tom Horan. He is a "catalyst". He
has a consistent vision of the future with clear and simple methods to
achieve it. His positive influence has been far-reaching; affecting
people from 5 to 105.
Joining Scouting was the foundation for Tom's work with children
throughout his life. Troop 109 molded him as a Scout beginning in 1946
and later benefited from him as Scoutmaster. He retired as Scoutmaster
in 1994 after 35 years of service. After his first week of summer camp
in 1947, he thought that he might come back, he did and has every year
since then. He joined the camp staff in 1952 and for the next 20 years
held various positions. In 1973, Tom became the Camp Director and
continues to this day. His moral values and vast knowledge have
continued to keep Mattatuck exactly the same, only different. This was
most recently evident when in 1994, the camp was among the 10 most
successful council camps in the country to be analyzed by the National
Scout Office. They wanted to know how he did it? His reply? (as he
pointed to a 16 year old Scout) "That young man will someday be our
Program Director." He picks out his staff years ahead.
Tom not only affected the lives of youth through Scouting but also at
Naugatuck High School . He began teaching in September of 1959 and
continued in the Printing Department until 1992 when he retired from
teaching. In the fall of 1992, he was rehired as a printing consultant
at the high school where you can still find him running the printing
presses.
In 1971, a camp nurse named Jean was hired. A few years later Tom and
Jean were reacquainted and their friendship grew into their marriage in
1975. They are the proud parents of 3 children: David 19, Beth 17 and
Tina 14.
Tom "Toot" Horan has also been active in the Beacon Valley Grange,
Church and AARP. The success of Mattatuck can only be attributed to the
consistency there. Since 1946, there have only been two things
consistent: The land and Tom Horan. The land just sat there and Tom
didn't.
