Rapid Growth

In my troop years ago, we came up with a formula for changing the number of
patrols in the troop. This was devised by the junior leaders. Everyone
knew the "rules" and we never had any problems that I am aware of.

Whenever a patrol reached 10 scouts, adding another meant that the group
had to divide into two patrols.

Whenever a patrol dropped to only four scouts, they had two months to boost
their numbers to at least five. If they didn't they would merge with
another patrol (or sometimes two).

Recruiting from another patrol was considered bad form but anytime a patrol
was added or dropped, everyone was eligible to request a patrol change.
Most of the time they didn't.

This meant that for the most part we had two or three patrols, two which
were rather constant (Beavers and Panthers) and a third which came and
went - frequently used the name Flaming Arrow.
