Grieving in Scouting

Norman J. MacLeod (gaelwolf@SSNET.COM)
Fri, 29 Mar 1996 16:58:03 -0500

There is something that circles hesitantly about the back of our minds
from time to time - how will we be able to cope if one of our Scouts
dies?

There is no roadmap given to us in our training on how to deal with the
worst that can happen in our Scout Gruops - the death of someone who has
only just begin to journey life's pathways. The outpouring of support we
receive from our friends, families, and other members ouf our extended
Scouting family is only there for a few days or weeks, and then we are
left pretty much on our own.

In keeping with not avoiding the harder edges of Scouting, Edwin van der
Elst and I have collaborated on Erik's Page, located in the Gaelic Wolf
Scouting Pages at URL:

http://www.win.net/~gws/gaelwolf/erik.htm

Erik was a thirteen-year-old Scout in Edwin's Scout Troop who died after
a fall from a tree three years ago. The page in its present form follows
the trail of mourning through the grieving process from the day of the
accident to the present.

As time moves along from here, we will work together to make this into a
resource for any and all Scout Groups (and any other youth group similar
to Scouting) who suffers the loss of a young member to accident or
illness. We think it is quite helpful in its present form, but there are
still some improvements we would like to make.

Some of you who are reading this now may need the support that just
reading this can provide, and there may well be aspects of the grieving
process that Erik's Scout Group went through that will be of use to you
now.

Norman
