Evette, Hal & Others Trying to Find Old Patches,
First let me address the values of Evette's finds and then provide some
general information.
The 1943 How Book of Cubbing is worth between $7.50 and $10.00.
The Franklin K. Matthews 1919 book, The Boy Scouts Book of Stories, if it
is one of the Boy Scout Year Books, is worth $50.00 in good condition.
If it is not part of this series, it may be worth more in good condition.
If it is in poor condition the price drops quickly.
The badly worn Scout Handbook circa 1943 really has little value to
collectors and is one best kept for sentimental value or as a reference.
If it were in good condition, it would be worth between $15 and $18.00.
I know of four reputable sources to get an appraisal for old Scout items,
all of whom belong to the Scout Memorabilia Appraisers and Dealers
Association. They are:
Scouting Collectables
Doug & Robyn Bearce
P.O. Box 4742
Salem, Oregon 97302
503-399-9872
Streamwood Company
Chris R. Jensen
P.O. Box 1841
Easley, South Carolina 29641
803-859-2915
The Trading Post
Peter P. Bielak
5516 Trent Street, Somerset
Washington, DC 20815-5512
301-654-5822
The Stevesons
Jim & Bea Stevenson
216 Sage Lane
Euliss, Texas 76039
817-354-8903
Both the Streamwood Company and The Stevensons have subscription
newsletters that catalog items for sale. I don't know, but suspect the
other two do the same. They all have various older patches from time to
time along with a rich selection of other Scouting goodies. They also
carry a number of more recent/new items like CSPs and OA Flaps.
For those interested in current patches, I would also add Heart O'Texas
Trader, John Conley WIlliams, P.O. Box 23374, Waco, Texas 76702-3374
817-772-1106.
I hope that one of these sources will help those of you who are looking
for that special old patch to recognize an old timer, relative, etc. or
just for fun.
