Bridging to Troop; Whittling

Jan Mussler (mussler@SPOT.COLORADO.EDU)

Hi all! The bridging of Webelos has been an interesting thread. But
what if there is only one "local" troop to which the Webelos could
conveniently bridge. Nederland, CO has approx. 1200 people, one Pack (30
kids) and one Troop (8 guys left). Our Webelos, to my knowledge, haven't
been invited to Camporees, Klondikes and the like. However, last year we
only had one Lone Scout Webelo. And this year we have about 8 1st year
Webelos. It is possible, for our boys to visit Troops in Boulder which
is 17 miles away. But the liklihood of them joining "down below" is low,
unless they go to school there. From the posts, it would appear that the
Troop has no real motivation to "recruit" us since 1) they are struggling
themselves and 2) those who hang on to Scouts will move into the local
Troop most likely. Some of the "problems" you've cited don't exist for
us; but then the excitement of different Troop Programs doesn't either.
It takes some of the fun out of the bridging and there isn't that
"looking forward to something" for our Webelos. Any comments?

Also - does anyone know in the Boulder, CO area who you might contact to
set up a "Whittlin'" field trip or demonstration? We'd like to see if we
can get all the boys (Bear and up) this summer to earn their Whittlin'
Chip. But I don't know much about proper whittin'. I just whittled
sticks as a kid.

Den Leaders - How do you handle your summer meetings of your dens? How
often do you meet? The other Wolf Den Leader and I joined forces so we'd
be sure to always have 2 leaders and enough kids for activities. We
(roughly) planned weeks so we'd have one Scout activity a week (Pack
included). That only left us about 6 days for den activities - working
around Cub Day Camp, Pack camp-out (family camping), parades. Is this
about right, not enough, too much for the summer? I had about 20 ideas
for activities to help the boys with more difficult Bear achievements and
electives and belt loops. (Why does it seem I have more activities than
time? <grin>)

TIA,
