More Scouts in the News!

Hi all,
In my doctor's office yesterday I was looking through the November 20,
1995 People Magazine, and near the front was a picture of a uniformed
Eagle Scout from a California troop, along with Kirsty Alley (of
"Cheers" fame), also in a BSA uniform, presenting a "Citizen of the
Year" award to John Travolta. Kirsty, it seems, is a former girl
scout. Anyway, you might want to check out the back issues of People
at your local library.
Second, in this week's issue of Alexandria's biweekly paper, the
Gazette-Packet, a letter to the editor was published from a scout in
troop 135 complaining about a devloper's plans to build on one of the
last remaining woodland parcels in Alexandria's west end (known
locally as "condo canyon"). This has become a major environmental
flap in recent months (well--major by Alexandria standards, anyway).
Interestingly, the developer was irritated enough to write back, and
his letter is a model of arrogance and condescension. He advised the
young man to get all the facts straight before writing, and all but
patted him on the head and told him he really ought to leave important
decisions to his betters and to wait to comment on public issues until
he was a grown-up! Not likely to win the developer any friends on the
City Council, or with the local BSA. This is a man badly in need of a
public relations expert on his staff, if not some manners....
