Jim Payne asked about use of canned foods for the 1st Class cooking
requirement.
My response would be that the requirements need to be followed as
written:
"Prepare a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu that requires cooking;
secure ingredients; supervise your assistants in fire building; and
prepare the meals."
One could question whether things like precooked stews really involved
cooking, since they really only require heating (but so do hot dogs,
instant oatmeal, and a number of other common camp foods). My own
inclination would be to allow it as long as it is part of a
well-planned, nutritious menu. For cooking MB, it specifies that canned
goods may not be used for some parts, and it seems to me that camping
and cooking MB should be where more advanced cooking techniques are
encouraged -- I see the 1st Class requirements as just trying to get the
boys comfortable with cooking in the outdoors and doing basic menu
planning (although I do plan on trying this next year to encourage the
New Scout Patrol to be a bit more ambitious, since I am going to be
eating with them and I would just as soon avoid having chili dogs every
month).
I'm sure others will have different opinions.
YiS,
Jon
